Ronald McDonald House – Oak Street »
“You be there for them; we’ll be there for you.”
The Ronald McDonald House – Oak Street serves families whose child is receiving care for a life-threatening illness at a Twin Cities-area hospital.
Families supported at this Ronald McDonald House location must live farther than 60 miles from the Twin Cities. In addition to the geographic requirement, family eligibility is determined through a hospital social work referral.
Our original location in the Twin Cities — our Oak Street House — is our cornerstone program. On average, its 48 rooms are occupied more than 95 percent of the time.
Families may stay with us as long as their children are receiving care at a local hospital. Those who stay at the House while a child undergoes a bone marrow transplant average 142 nights with us. The average length of stay for non-transplant families is 20 nights. The RMH – Oak Street has the longest average length of stay of any House in the world.
“We believe when children are ill, any distance from their side is too far.”
Families staying at the Ronald McDonald House – Oak Street are welcomed into a nurturing community. They are provided support through a wide array of services, including:
Open every night of the year, the House offers accommodations to meet varying family needs. Each room includes a private bathroom, private phone line, TV and DVD player and various combinations of double and bunk beds and sleeper sofas.
Volunteers in our Cooks for Kids program prepare home-cooked dinners for our families each evening and brunch on the weekends. Supplies for additional meals and snacks are always available to families, who are free to use our well-equipped kitchens.
Our accredited onsite school inside the House enables children – siblings or patients, as they are able – to continue their studies during time away from home. With the ability to keep other children in school during a child’s treatment, parents are better able to keep the entire family together.
Because of the extensive lengths of stay at this Ronald McDonald House, we strive to meet the evolving needs of our families with relevant services. Bingo, our summer program, tickets to local events and a shuttle bus are just some of the services available to families at this location.
Everyone loves Jerry and we’re pretty sure Jerry loves everyone.
Jerry is our furry Labradoodle and a full-time member of the family at the Ronald McDonald House – Oak Street, where he excels at making everyone feel welcome and at home.
Since families cannot bring their pets with them during their stay, Jerry was generously donated as a gift to the organization at the annual Fam Glam fundraising event in 2006. Since then, he has given support, playfulness, laughter and plenty of cuddle time to anyone who crosses his path.
Though he may not realize the power of his presence, Jerry generously provides moments of much needed respite during times of heartache and stress – a gift welcomed by parents and children at Ronald McDonald House – Oak Street.
